In North America, under two major business groups, BlueScope is engaged in the manufacturing, construction and sale of pre-engineered buildings, metal coating and painting, hot rolled production and ferrous scrap steel recycling.
Buildings North America, including Butler Buildings and Varco Pruden Buildings, is a fully integrated business that designs, manufactures and markets custom engineered metal building systems and components for industrial, commercial and community segments of low-rise non-residential building and construction markets and government applications. BlueScope Buildings draws upon a number of distribution channels to bring its product to the customer, including:
BlueScope Properties Group provides commercial real estate development throughout North America, and with our connection to BlueScope Buildings’ Builder Network of over 2,000 contractors, we can build teams with critical local knowledge and expertise. The builders we partner with understand local building codes and provide the right products and services for your facility’s needs.
BlueScope Coated Products was established in June 2022, being a result of BlueScope acquiring the coil coatings business from Cornerstone Building Brands, including products sold under the Metal Coaters and Metal Prep brands. BlueScope Coated Products is the second largest metal painter in the US, with a total capacity of around 900,000 tonnes per annum across seven facilities.
It paints a range of finishes on steel and aluminium substrates for many applications, including building products and manufactured goods, with a demonstrated history of robust financial performance, and a sales mix focused on attractive end-use segments. BlueScope Coated Products offers significant opportunities for medium- to longer-term growth through product development and branded products, consistent with our customer service and value proposition around the globe.
ASC Profiles manufactures steel building components including architectural roof and wall systems and structural roof and floor decking at nine manufacturing facilities located in the states of California, Washington State, Oregon, Utah and Alaska.
It operates three building product lines, which are sold primarily through a national network of offices and sales representatives:
Steelscape produces metal coated and painted steel coils for non-residential building and construction markets in North America. Steelscape sells its products to a broad range of customers in the construction end markets in the U.S. and Canada for use in metal buildings, roof and wall panels, steel framing and decking. The products are primarily distributed to the U.S. east and west coasts with approximately 60% of sales to roll-formers and metal builder customers.
Steelscape has two manufacturing facilities in the U.S., located in Washington and California. The California facilities include metal coating, painting and slitting equipment, with Washington also operating a pickling and cold mill line. Total annual capacity is approximately 475,000 tonnes of metal-coated steel products and 215,000 tonnes of painting capacity.
North Star BlueScope Steel in Delta, Ohio was established in 1996, and its facilities are amongst the newest in North America, and use leading edge steelmaking technologies and processes. In October 2015, BlueScope acquired the remaining 50 per cent of North Star BlueScope Steel from Cargill Inc. to move to full ownership of this business.
Around 2 million tonnes of hot rolled coil are produced annually from North Star's dual electric arc furnaces, using scrap metal, pig iron and alloys. North Star BlueScope Steel ranks fifth by volume in the production of hot rolled coil in North America, and is consistently voted number one for eight consecutive years in the annual Jacobson Survey of steel customers measuring customer satisfaction.
BlueScope Recycling & Materials, acquired by BlueScope in December 2021, is a full-service, ferrous scrap metal recycler with processing facilities in Waterloo, Indiana and in Delta, Ohio adjacent to our North Star BlueScope Steel facility.
With a priority on delivering the highest level of service, BlueScope Recycling buys scrap from industrial generators, wholesale suppliers, and the general public. This business transforms raw ferrous scrap into specification melt products for primary and secondary producers of iron, steel, and stainless steel.
This business is focused on achieving long-term sustainable growth by applying our extensive knowledge and experience to support the unique needs of generators and consumers of scrap metal.
